Alejandro DJ was born in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico but grew up in the town of Caguas. As a child he drew and painted all the images he liked: super heroes, faces, cars, monsters and the like. He remembers doing many illustrations at his grade school before every holiday. At the age of ten he met Victor Torres Lizardi, a professional painter from Caguas who awakened in him, his everlasting love for art.

At sixteen he moved to New York City, where he started observing the masters' work in museums and galleries. Alejandro DJ studied at Famous Artist's Schools in Westport, Connecticut and Art Student's League of New York City.

Back in his home island, he kept studying art on his own at the same time that he worked in oils and attended the University of Puerto Rico, where he was an honor graduate. His favorite mediums are pastel, acrylic but mostly oil. He is a natural figurative and portrait artist who likes painting any offbeat subject. In 1985 Alejandro founded Alejandro DJ Studio in Caguas, an art school born of a genuine interest for a figurative art education with effective communication available to children and adults. He dedicated 28 years of his life to teaching basic and advanced drawing and painting principles in the traditional method. In 1987 he received an award for his oil painting “The Hat Salesman” in a contest in Editorial Sin Nombre at The Art Students League of San Juan. This work and another of his oil paintings titled “The Class” were acquired by the Museum of Art in Caguas as part of its permanent collection. His work has been exhibited in group and solo shows in the United States and Puerto Rico.

In 1997 he traveled to Europe where he visited over twenty five museums in France, Spain, Italy, Brussels and Holland. During this trip he had the opportunity to closely observe and analyze old masters paintings like Rembrandt, Velazquez, Sorolla, Goya, El Greco, Van Gogh, Caravaggio and Vermeer. This experience opened his eyes to the true fundamentals of oil painting and his duty to teach them. Alejandro is a constant student of painting and for six years he wrote and videotaped these fundamentals for his Spanish speaking students. His five video oil painting course titled “Oil Painting Fundamentals” has been praised and purchased by art students in Argentina, Brazil, California, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Germany, Florida, France, Illinois, Indonesia, Los Angeles , Mexico, Norway, New York, Peru, Puerto Rico, Spain, Texas, Uruguay, Venezuela, Virginia and Washington. This course has also been acquired by prestigious art schools in Puerto Rico as a resource for their classes. Alejandro is currently translating these videos to the English language.

Alejandro DJ stays in touch with his students through Regalos de Arte, a free Spanish weekly newsletter he sends on the Internet every Saturday, which includes essays, videos, opinions, reviews, and articles about art.
